Background

The community have an opportunity to obtain the disused Catholic church in Station Road for use as a community run shop and cafe. There are numerous reasons why this would be of benefit to the village and not just as a village shop. Located in Station Road between the Village Hall and the Recreation Ground obtaining this building will place the facilities away from the busy A21 and closer to the main residential areas additionally improving safety with off road parking and also reducing congestion on the A21.

The main area is a good size for a shop and cafe with potential to include other facilities to enhance the village economy and promote enterprise. A small cafe area is planned equiped with Internet access for informal meetings or just a chat over a coffee.

The area at the rear will be converted into a community area for use by various groups including youth group workers to provide youth facilities in the village.

Recent Events - Tidying the grounds

With the growth unchecked for several years the trees and bushes around the grounds were taking over. The task set on Staurday 8th October was to tidy up the grounds and get them into a manageable state ready for the winter. A band of volunteers arived at 10:00 armed with hedge trimmers, loppers and saws.Others arrived with just a pair of hands to help out where ever they were needed.

Fuelled with tea, coffee and biscuits the team set to work around the grounds cutting back hedges, trimming the low growing branches from the trees and uncovering the courtesy / security lights and CCTV cameras. These were tested and with a couple of new bulbs will be fully functional a definite bonus with the nights now drawing in.

After a couple of hours the grounds were looking really good and there was a massive pile of trimmings to be disposed of. A job well done!
