Open Day - 19th March 2011

Despite the theft of the roofing material just prior to the open day on the 19th March 2011 some temporary roofing is now protecting the building from the elements and the open day could proceed. It would appear that Hurst Green was not alone with other local churches and village halls suffering from theft of roofing materials around the same time.

The open day was extremely well attended with around 200 visitors coming to have a look around and chat with the steering group. It was very encouraging to hear the very positive comments from people and the offers of support for the project. It was also the first chance for the steering group to start discussing the finer detail with the village, such as what type of things would you want / buy from the community shop, opening hours etc. We have started collating the valuable information we received, but if you couldn't be there to contribute don't worry, based on the information received so far we will be conducting more extensive and detailed surveys around the village as the project progresses.

Finally we would like to extend a big thank-you to all those who helped with making the very successful open day happen and congratulations to Nicola DeHavilland who won the bottle of champagne in the free prize draw.

The Beginning - February 2009

The community have an opportunity to obtain the disused Catholic church in Station Road for use as a community run shop and cafe. There are numerous reasons why this would be of benefit to the village and not just as a village shop. Located in Station Road between the Village Hall and the Recreation Ground obtaining this building will place the facilities away from the busy A21 and closer to the main residential areas additionally improving safety with off road parking and also reducing congestion on the A21.

The main area is a good size for a shop and Post Office with potential to include other facilities to enhance the village economy and promote enterprise. A small cafe area is planned equiped with Internet access for informal meetings or just a chat over a coffee.

The area at the rear will be converted into a community area for use by various groups including youth group workers to provide youth facilities in the village.
